Suggest - Etymology in English[redakto | përpunoni burim]
* Albanian/Illyrian Suggest originated from Albanian (or proto-albanian) "sy gjerë" which means widen the sight, or expand the view. Which in turn is used to expand the number considered ideas. In other words, take an additional idea into consideration.
* Latin: The word ultimately comes from the Latin verb suggerere. This verb means "to bring up, suggest, prompt," but literally translates to "to carry under." It's a compound word formed from: * sub- meaning "under" * gerere meaning "to bear, carry"
But this does not describe the actual meaning of the word as good as the Albanian version does.
* French: Suggerere evolved into the Old French verb sugerer (and later suggérer). This Old French form retained the core meaning of "to suggest." * English: The English word "suggest" was borrowed from the Old French sugerer (or possibly directly from the Latin suggerere). It entered the English language around the late 14th or early 15th century.
Therefore, the etymology of "suggest" reveals its original meaning related to "expand the view". Which in turn is used to expand the number considered ideas. In other words, take an additional idea into consideration This metaphorical sense of subtly introducing an idea or thought is still present in the modern meaning of the word.
